"Resérvame el vals, única novela de Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, esposa del célebre escritor norteamericano Francis Scott Fitzgerald, ha permanecido inédita en España hasta la presente edición. Publicada en 1932 por Charles Scribner, la historia de la elaboración del texto no escapa, una vez más, a la leyenda del matrimonio Fitzgerald. El núcleo principal fue redactado aproximadamente a lo largo de cuatro semanas durante la estancia de su autora en el hospital psiquiátrico John Hopkins de Baltimore, en 1932, internada allí por mostrar graves trastornos psíquicos. Cuando Scott lo leyó se sintió furioso al comprobar que estaba basado en buena parte en el mismo material autobiográfico que daba soporte a su novela en desarrollo, Suave es la noche (1934), lo que le llevó a persuadir a su esposa para una revisión conjunta del material. Una vez satisfecho con el resultado, él mismo escribiría a su editor: «Aquí está la novela de Zelda. Ahora es una buena novela, quizá una muy buena novela –podría llegar a decir. Tiene los defectos y las virtudes de una primera novela... Se trata de algo absolutamente nuevo... »

Alabama Beggs, alter ego de Zelda Fitzgerald, constituye el eje alrededor del cual gira la acción. De la mano de Alabama nos adentramos en la conmovedora evocación del entorno familiar y social en el que se desarrolla su infancia, propio de una decimonónica ciudad del sur de los Estados Unidos. A partir de su matrimonio con un pintor de fulgurante éxito iniciarán un largo viaje por Nueva York y Europa. Scott y Zelda Fitzgerald formarían parte del círculo de escritores norteamericanos de la denominada Generación perdida, con epicentro en el París de entreguerras. En este sentido, Resérvame el vals encierra un importante valor como testimonio, desde la óptica particular de una mujer, del ambiente que se respiraba en aquellos días en que –en palabras de Hemingway– París era una fiesta. Allí resurge la pasión de Zelda por la danza profesional y, en una espiral de impotencia y fatalidad, el relato nos conducirá por la senda de un doble fracaso personal, como bailarina y como esposa. El estilo de Zelda está salpicado de muchos de los hallazgos de la vanguardia literaria, especialmente en cuanto a la exquisita poética que lo recorre, sin perder por ello la eficacia del tiempo narrativo y la sutileza de los diálogos".
